Masons do not solicit for members.

How can I become a Mason?

Many men are surprised that no one ever asked them to become a Mason

However, it works another way. For hundreds of years, Masons have been forbidden to ask others to join the fraternity.

There's actually a good reason for this non-approach. And, it's not that Masons are being exclusive.

Masonry has both esoteric and sacred values far beyond what people see on the face of it

Becoming a Mason is a matter for each man to decide.

If you are seeking Membership YOU MUST ASK a Mason or a Masonic Lodge for a petition.

You must be a man at least 21 years of age

You must be of good moral character

You must be of good report before the world

You must have a personal belief in the Fatherhood of God and Eternal Life

You must decide to become a Mason of "your own free will and accord"

You will need to express your personal interest in joining the Fraternity.

You must be loyal to your country.

You must be dedicated to providing for your own family.

You must sign a Petition, stating your age, occupation and place of residence.

You must be recommended by at least two master masons who are members of the lodge you are petitioning

Members of the Lodge vote by secret ballot. To be accepted, the ballot must be unanimous.

Upon acceptance of your petition by the craft, the lodge secretary will notify you by mail. He will work with you to arrange for a suitable time for you to receive your first degree. At that time you will be considered an entered apprentice. Later, you will be passed to the degree of a fellowcraft, the second degree. Finally you will receive your third degree and become a full member of the fraternity as a master mason.

If the petition happens to be denied, it is strictly forbidden for any Mason to ever discuss the matter outside of lodge, so the man is never denigrated by the incidental rejection of his petition.
